Combat in an urban environment is significantly different than combat occurring in conventional terrain. Differences include the availability of certain resources, the abundance and density of civilians and environmental discrepancies. With the Cold War and the omnipresent threat of attack by the Soviets, the U.S. military needed to be effective in all military operation scenarios.

This report examines the role of logistics and combat service support systems in urban warfare amphibious operations. It discusses operational considerations, indigenous resources, logistics planning, and mid-range influence.

“Isolation of an urban area, while generally required to fulfill tactical objectives, generates an increased reliance by the indigenous populace on external (friendly) support for foodstuffs and medical items.” (p 5-2)
