Regional Issues
Through sub-regional processes which are led by Focal Points, and coordinated by the Regional Secretariat in Tokyo (Peace Boat), a multi-pronged programme of action and research, network-building and advocacy is taking shape on key regional issues.
The following issues are identified by GPPAC Northeast Asia as of key concern:
- Crisis of the Korean peninsula
- Political stalemate across the Taiwan Strait
- Kuril Islands / Northern Territories dispute between Japan and Russia
- Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution under threat and the remilitarization of Japan
- Dispatch of troops to Iraq by Japan and South Korea
- Senkaku / Diaoyu / Tiaoyutai Islands dispute between Japan and China
- Lack of historical understanding and reconciliation with regard to events and war crimes during Japan’s period of imperialist aggression
- Challenges of sustainable development and human security
