Coastal Councils Climate Change Adaptation Plan

The report identifies regionally common risks arising from climate change for coastal councils in the Hunter, Central and Lower North Coast region of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. These include Greater Taree, Great Lakes, Port Stephens, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Wyong and Gosford Councils. The report identifies regional opportunities for collaboration across these councils for responding to climate change.

CCA and DRR – Issues and Challenges      

This book highlights the linkages between climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk reduction (DRR), CCA-DRR synergy, and interactions. It focuses on governance, education and technology as the framework of CCA-DRR linkage by looking at south Asian countries, ASEAN and Small Island Developing States. The book provides awareness on the current trend of research in the field.

Infrastructure, Engineering and Climate Adaptation        

The report examines vulnerabilities to the effects of climate change within four UK infrastructure sectors (energy, transport, water, and communications), and the modifications that would be needed to increase resilience. It considers the infrastructure system as a whole and vulnerabilities which arise as a result of interdependencies between different sectors.

Garnaut Update Paper: Weighing the Costs and Benefits      

This is the first of eight update papers to the 2008 Garnaut Climate Change Review. It focuses on five issues: the choice of discount rate; the presence of uncertainty; the interaction between climate change and economic welfare; Australian contribution to various levels of international climate change related effort; and the optimal balance between mitigation and adaptation.

Effects of Extreme Heat on Population Health    

The paper provides a review of numerous studies which associate high ambient temperatures with adverse health outcomes. It addresses the effect of extreme heat on population health in Australia, risk factors, and in the context of international studies, discusses policy implications and planning options to limit future heat related morbidity and mortality in Australia’s ageing population.

International Conference on Building Resilience – Sri Lanka

This conference will take place from 19-21 July 2011 in Sri Lanka. It aims to encourage debate on individual, institutional and societal coping strategies to address the challenges associated with disaster risk. Abstracts that address disaster risk and the need to develop resilience from diverse perspectives may be submitted by contacting the conference chairs.
