US Department Of Energy Awards Nautilus $340,000 For Asian Energy Security Project

The US Department of Energy awarded the Nautilus Institute a $340,000 grant in support of the Asian Energy Security Project in 2005. The Asian Energy Security Project seeks to produce collaborative research, involving groups from each of the countries in Northeast Asia (including the DPRK, the ROK, the Russian Far East, China, Japan, and Mongolia) on different paths to addressing energy security issues in the region.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the United Nation’s International Atomic Energy Agency is investigating a secret nuclear fuel experiment conducted in early 2000 by ROK scientists, the officials said. The ROK reported that its “laboratory scale” experiment “involved the production of only milligram quantities of enriched uranium,” the IAEA said in a statement posted on its Web site. Highly enriched uranium can be used to make nuclear warheads. But the ROK said Thursday it has no intention of building nuclear bombs.

The report states “because this type of verification task is unprecedented, it is now necessary to design a verifiable dismantlement procedure that takes the steps necessary to create a transparent dismantlement process and ensure that a proliferant state cannot reconstitute the enrichment program without timely detection by the international community.”
