DETERRENCE: Israel Debuts Micro Robot in Anti-Tunnel Campaign, Barbara Opall-Rome, Defense News, July 28, 2014
State and non-state militaries are developing micro-weapons. Israel used a micro-robot to attack Hamas’ tunnels in Gaza. The US Navy has a tiny guided missile. Scientists build tiny bots that mimic insects or animals such as bats to surveil or explode. Micro munitions and sensors mated with tiny precision guided delivery systems are the next big thing.

DPRK: U.S. Policy towards North Korea. Glyn T. Davies, Testimony before the subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. (30 July 2014)
North Korea’s behavior during the most recent US-South Korea exercise was overall restrained. The reason for the restraint is unclear, but it is clear that North Korea intends to use the exercises and other military activities as rationale to divert scarce economic resources to strengthening the military. United States’ policy and various legal regimes would tend to indicate the threshold for talks will not be met soon. However, policies and law are always interpreted in a political environment and can change to suit needs.

GOVERNANCE AND CIVIL SOCIETY: In Sewol We Divide, Kang Seung-woo, Korea Times (26 August 2014)
The ROK and Japan continue to struggle to overcome the aftereffects of national disasters. The Sewol ferry accident is still strongly dividing ROK politics, as the opposition party begins a full boycott of the Assembly and refuses to act on any bills until a special committee to investigate the accident is formed. In Fukushima, the numbers of suicides linked to the accident continue to rise.

CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION: Research Article: Neonates in Ahmedabad, India, During the 2010 Heat Wave: A Climate Change Adaptation Study, Khyati Kakkad et al.,Journal of Environmental and Public Health, vol. 2014, 8 pages (2014)
The health effects of climate change are a growing international concern that may have dramatic implications for the health of future generations. Newborns and pregnant women comprise some of our most heat-vulnerable populations and thus could be among those most affected by climate change.
