Hazard of Extreme Wind Gusts to Buildings in Australia

The paper presents a preliminary study on wind-related hazard to the Australian infrastructure. It uses the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) anemometer data. The paper computes the gust speed by combining cyclonic and non-cyclonic gust hazards, and investigates the sensitivity of wind gust hazard to possible climate change.

Linking Urban Development to Climate Adaptation and Mitigation

The paper identifies some viable urban development strategies for contributing both to the mitigation and adaptation to climate change. It takes an example of the city of Cuenca in Spain. The paper provides an integrative approach, successful precedents, and draws lessons for action on urban form, land use, and local economic development.

Climate Change: Designing Adaptation Policy

The report contributes to the development of Canadian climate adaptation policies targeted at extreme weather events. It is primarily concerned with community climate adaptation. The report analyses two sectors that are particularly sensitive to extreme weather events – emergency management and infrastructure – and identifies specific adaptation actions in these areas.

Wind and Solar Electricity: Challenges and Opportunities

The report examines three primary obstacles to deployment of wind and solar power: cost, variability of generation, and lack of transmission. It explains these challenges, explores policy options for addressing them, and describes the implications of future scenarios that entail significantly higher levels of electricity generation from wind and solar power.

Climate Justice – Community Answers to Climate Chaos

The report demonstrates that poor communities in the developing world can be a significant part of the climate change solution. It argues for a stronger role for civil society and community organisations in the global response to climate chaos, and the need for rich countries to foot the bill via a new funding body.

Global Conference on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands 2010

This conference will take place on May 3-7, 2010 at UNESCO, Paris. It will provide the opportunity for participants to address the major issues affecting the oceans at global, regional, and national levels and to make progress in advancing the global oceans agenda.  Abstracts may be submitted by 9 October 2009 to Dr. Miriam Balgos; mailto: mbalgos@udel.edu
