Climate Change in Cities – An Integrated Urban Model            

The paper outlines the structure and function of an integrated model for understanding how land use planning policy affects water, energy, and transport. Using data for Sydney, Australia, the paper summarises how policy guidance can be provided to city officials responding to climate change, its role in resilience and potential for informing adaptation priorities.

Local Urban Planning to Address Climate Change

The paper presents a case study, showing a local government’s capacity to address energy consumptions and local greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in areas under its control. It demonstrates some strengths and weaknesses in the actions of local institutions to complement the national and international efforts to address climate change.

Energy Efficiency Policies in G8 Countries – Current Progress   

The report provides an overview of the current energy efficiency policy context across all G8 countries. It summarises how well G8 countries are progressing with implementing the G8/IEA 25 energy efficiency policy recommendations. The report concludes with a call for further targeted action to meet pressing energy-related challenges.

Vulnerability Assessment – South African Farming Sector  

The paper analyses the vulnerability of South African farmers to climate change. It develops a vulnerability index and compares vulnerability indicators across the country’s nine provinces. The paper concludes that management activities should be tailored to local conditions and effort should be invested in a range of policies and measures in highly vulnerable districts of South Africa.

International Sustainable Development Conference 2010

This conference will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 30 May – 1 June, 2010. It invites contributions relating to the latest developments associated with sustainable development, cross-sectoral governance, and issues concerning climate change. Abstracts (around 300 words) may be submitted by 31 December 2009.
