1.    Role of Planning Practitioners – Climate Change Adaptation

The presentation recognises the role of planning practitioners in adapting to climate change. It highlights the challenges and policy decisions of the Australian Government in dealing with climate change. It gives information on the Adaptation Toolkit, which provides information, options, assessment criteria and planning options for stakeholders.

2.    Achieving Sustainability in Urban Asia

The online book provides an overview of urban region development in Asia and considers how it might be made more sustainable. It examines urban development policies and ‘good practice’ case-studies in 12 Asian countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

3.    Impacts of Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050

The paper explores the impacts of continued, relatively unrestrained greenhouse gas emissions over the next half-century. It focuses on already stressed systems capable of being driven over the edge by radical or gradual climate change. It offers an alternative and analytical approach – a ‘system vulnerability approach’ – to understand and anticipate climate change disruptions.

4.    Adaptation and Risk Management for Poverty Reduction

The report uses a case study from Kenya. It provides insights into how an integrated approach to disaster risk management (DRM) and climate change adaptation can be built. It identifies the disaster management practices reflecting future adaptation needs. The report assesses changes required for the practices to address future risks.

5.    Limitations, Needs and Future Prospects: Adaptation

The paper states that focus on mitigation creates policy instruments biased against adaptation. The assumption that marginal adaptation is a local issue and mitigation a global one distorts progress on adaptation. Adaptation’s success depends on its institutionalization at a level at least equal to UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol.

6.    GREENHOUSE 2007 – Conference

GREENHOUSE 2007 Conference is being held on 02-05 October 2007 in Sydney. The latest climate change projections for Australia are being released at the conference. The conference focus includes: future projections; use of probabilities for risk management; impact of climate change on human activity; changing perceptions of climate change. Abstracts (up to 400 words) that address conference goals are welcome.
