Green Roofs in Australia: Opportunities and Barriers

This paper examines green roofs in Australia. It finds that there are very few examples of extensive green roofs in Australia, although they are a known adaptation and mitigation tool. The paper discusses the challenges and information gaps that need to be researched in order to progress rooftop greening in Australia

Adaptation as Response to Impacts of Climate Change – HCMC

The paper attempts to respond to the following questions: How can Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) become a liveable city under the changing climate? How can urban planning respond to climate change impacts? And which role does the local population play in future development? The paper presents a range of tailor-made solutions to improve the resilience of urban areas in HCMC.

Uncertainty and Disaster Risk Management – Vienna

The study illustrates an interdisciplinary approach to flood risk analysis that combines hydrological flood risk assessment and simulation modeling with the computation of the financial parameters of flood risk management. Using this interdisciplinary approach, the study examines flood risks in the city of Vienna, Austria, together with some alternatives for mitigation of the damage caused by flooding.

India’s Opportunities for Mitigation and Adaptation

The paper discusses India’s ground water economy under the changing climate. It argues that the rise of private harvesting of groundwater and the decline in surface irrigation necessitates a totally new understanding of the operating system of India’s water economy. It concludes that India needs to make a transition from surface storage to ‘managed aquifer storage’ by learning from countries with a history in this form of water management.

Population Dynamics and Climate Change

The papers compiled in this volume broaden understanding across a wide range of population-climate change linkages. They provide a methodological guide to the current state of knowledge on issues such as population growth and emissions, population vulnerability and adaptation, migration and urbanization, and the data and analytical needs for the next stages of policy-relevant research.
