Building Bridges: Supporting Adaptation in Industry

The report focuses on climate adaptation in the private sector. It identifies the need for improved understanding of adaptation challenges and actions in small to medium enterprises. The report finds that climate change can present opportunities as well as risks to business. Therefore, stronger partnerships between industry and researcher are required to support improved adaptation in business.

Climate Departure from Recent Variability

The paper presents a new index of the year when the projected mean climate of a given location moves to a state continuously outside the bounds of historical variability under alternative greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. It finds that the unprecedented climates will occur earliest in the tropics and among low-income countries, highlighting the vulnerability of global biodiversity and the limited governmental capacity to respond to the impacts of climate change.

Electric Grid Resilience to Weather Outages

This report describes the current state of the U.S. electric grid, the impact of widespread power outages caused by severe weather, and the increasing intensity and frequency of severe weather due to climate change. It documents numerous strategies for increasing the grid resilience and reliability. The report presents an economic model and uses it to estimate the annual cost of power outages caused by severe weather in the United States.

Monitoring and Evaluation for Climate Adaptation

The report provides a synthesis of current adaptation M&E (monitoring and evaluation) resources and approaches so that practitioners are able to more easily identify information and tools that are most relevant to their needs. The authors plan to update this report in 2014, taking into account feedback on the first edition as well as new resources which are due to be published.

Business and Disaster Risk Reduction

This publication contains numerous good practices and case studies which apply one or more of the five essentials for businesses in pursuit of disaster risk reduction. It presents various types of collaboration and cooperation, core to the all five essentials, which are positioned as critical in minimizing or potentially eliminating disasters as well as disasters’ effects on people, property and ultimately, the health, economy and resilience of workers, communities, regions and nations.
